Talk:Skeptical Quote Collection
Funny, I was looking into creating a template to help with entering quotes into the table, but you beat me to it! =) Although, I'm curious why you chose to enter first and last names separately and made each sortable. It seems like a lot of duplication. Was it a workaround for the single names?

- Nah, I only thought about the single names the other day. Some people are better known by their first names, others by their surnames, so it made sense to me to sort them separately. But now you mention it, perhaps it's unnecessary. I guess maybe I started the whole thing before really thinking it through. What are your thoughts? Do you think names should be a single column sorted by surname?
--Teleuteskitty (talk) 17:56, 13 July 2012 (UTC)- Yeah, a single column for names just makes more sense to me. If you don't mind, I could take a stab at making a template for a row entry to simplify things, but I wouldn't get to it until later tonight.
-- Av8rmike (talk) 21:08, 13 July 2012 (UTC)- Just had a thought, reducing names to a single column may look better, but we could leave both sortable and display names in a single cell by using the single name template with 2 sort key inputs. That way we keep the extra info - which may not add a whole lot, but doesn't detract anything. I'll mock this up for the episode 61 and 62 quotes to see what you think.
- RE a template for whole row entries: I played with this idea, but it seemed pretty inflexible, and you would have to build in a number of conditional statements for instances like repeated quotes and irregular names. Although that doesn't necessarily mean it's not a good idea, I like flexibility, but we could always just not use the template when it wouldn't work.
- Also, bear in mind there are ~300 of these to change, if you're up for doing this ;)
--Teleuteskitty (talk) 15:47, 14 July 2012 (UTC)- I don't know; I just don't see a use case for being able to sort by first name. If it were me doing the page over, I'd probably have made one column for the name. However, at this point, since we already have the page set up one way, there might not be an overriding reason to change to something else. Our energy would probably be put to better use on transcribing, as we seem to be having a hard time keeping up as the episodes come out.

Wish I had heard of this site a month ago! I spent a weekend a bit ago putting together some code to scrape off all the quotes from the podcast archives. Too bad this was around here the whole time... Grr! In case it's ever needed, I'll leave the results here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ah7YtOBPcio1dGV0TmNVRG5WMXpiakhJMmJqWjBRMkE
I could post the code, too, if people want, or even modify it to grab other information if requested. Anything else obvious to pull from the archives? - Boss1000 (talk) 02:04, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
